A big ‘ole personal best red for 9-yo Ben, who couldn’t keep up with his mom Heidi on numbers but won the day’s “big fish” award. Heidi is an amazing angler and she is passing on the passion to her two children. The family holds a number of IGFA world records. Thank you Zach at IGFA headquarters, who connected Heidi with me. Double digit slot and overslot reds for mom Heidi and daughter Julia from Miami! Julia and family are in town for a sailing program and regatta, and took a break from the wind to fish skinny water and more importantly, “in the lee”! Julia caught her personal best 34” red! We found fish that were difficult to see under cloudy skies but wakes and nervous water gave their location away to allow us to steadily pick at them throughout the day. Anglers, including me, tend to overthink the lure or fly part of the equation. Mike was in town for three WINDY days and we saw some of about all that Hampton Roads and Tidewater Virginia offers, from tiny creeks near the great dismal swamp to massive flats behind ocean side islands. Bumped into a big school of floating slot reds in a tiny creek and a small school of massive red drum 100’ off a marsh point with a gradual drop off. Mike was able to get eats from the slot reds on a gorgeous critter fly his dad tied, but the bulls were down a bit. Heavy winds, floating lines and a fly that rode a bit too high left us disappointed that none of those orange glow monsters wanted to play. Great three days scouting many new areas. ‘Preciate the company, big man. Congrats to Tribe women’s basketball for first ever NCAA tourney win.
