These photos show the amazing biomass of big speckled trout in our Virginia waters from a couple weeks ago. I purposely did not post immediately as these fish need to be left alone when in “zombie” mode. The good news is most of these fish survived and have returned to deeper water. First redfish on fly for Donald and first redfish for TOTF 2025!!!!, in 41* water. Saw ~15, only got this 24”er to eat. Lots of denials from lethargic fish. They were in a cold coma. It’s been SO cold, fish would swim by a perfectly presented fly and not change pace. This property was the original farmhouse of Deep Creek, Newport News, built in the 18th century. The property faces due west across Deep Creek harbor and the lower James River, 5 miles wide at this point to Smithfield, Virginia. A bunch of nice trout, 100% on fly, in super high winds the last couple days. It’s difficult to exaggerate how good the winter speckled trout fly fishing is in Virginia. Paul and Cathy both had 50+ fish days, with a few citation fish mixed in, which has been standard fare with reasonable temps. Most of our fishing is floating lines with surprisingly short leaders. Occasionally we grab an outfit with IM line to ply deeper waters, but the majority of the biomass are on the mudflats soaking up the sun. I have lots of open dates Jan-March. If it’s cold, snowing or raining hard, we cancel, so there’s no risk. Wind is not a problem: I can always get you in the lee with wind to your back.
