It is always a true moment when someone catches their first fish on fly. It certainly was for Robert, who learned to fly cast in the boat then incredibly popped his first fish on fly: a 17” redfish!!!! A long day on the water usually starts early so Jud and Robert met me in the dark and the adventure began. The bite was good early and late, in low light, like so many trips are. Jud flew in from Memphis and is a fantastic fly angler. He came an inch within citation length on multiple yellow mouth trout and he popped some small reds. With the warmup, the specks wanted a fly running higher in the water column, and an unweighted white reverse tied deceiver delivered. Really fun day with two good dudes. Heavy rains and wind left our waters churned up and dirty so we went radical, throwing electric chicken (thanks Stan!) half n half and all pink and pink and chartreuse coyote (thanks Paul!) flies on floating lines (when water depths were 5’ or less) and IM lines (water > 5’. In the end, it was really the angler that made the difference: Anthony put on a show in multiple depths, with 20+ landed but no citations. A couple got close but no cigar! An EPIC speckled trout on fly, a second Virginia citation 24” trout and a mess of solid 17-23” fish made for a great day on the water for Cathy. Cat loves fishing fly (first and foremost) but will also throw spin and other conventional gear to understand what triggers these fish to eat.
