The waters off and around Virginia Beach offer some of the best fishing in the mid-Atlantic region. Because of its unique geography and location, Virginia Beach is home to both warm and cold-water species of fish, which means anglers can enjoy a wide variety of game and sport fishing year around.
Tidewater On The Fly’s owner and guide Capt. Wayne has a deep knowledge of the fly fishing in and around Virginia Beach. He also knows how to make fly fishing charters fun by sharing positive coaching and instruction to make you a better angler.
Tidewater On The Fly books charters in these popular fishing locations close to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton and Williamsburg:
Lower Chesapeake Bay: The lower Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are world famous for great fishing, diversity of species, and beautiful scenery. Chesapeake Bay is North America’s largest estuary and along with its rivers and creeks create the perfect environment for summer cobia, schoolie striped bass, massive red drum, and trophy speckled sea trout to thrive. In the summer months, Cobia move into the bay to spawn and allow us to catch some of the largest cobia on the East Coast. Capt. Wayne fishes year around and combines optimal times with key locations to can put you in the best place to catch the fish you’re after.
Elizabeth River: Located in Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth, the 4 branches of the “Liz” offer some of the best speckled trout fishing in the United States. Captain Wayne focused his winter trophy speckled trout fishing in the “Liz”. World record speckled trout are a realistic possibility every day on the water. TOTF anglers set two world records this winter. Winter redfish are a bonus and are frequently caught with short warmup trends.
Lower James River and its tributaries: the lower James River is a remarkable large river (5 miles wide!) that is home to schoolie stripers, slot and overslot redfish and speckled trout. Its tributaries include the Nansemond River, Chuckatuck Creek, and Pagan and Warwick Rivers. Beautiful Ragged and Mulberry Islands offer classic flats style fishing in marsh environments. Hampton Roads is an urban environment but offers remarkable redfish and striper fishing. The James River offers excellent opportunities for beginning fly anglers, particularly anglers looking to learn sinking line fly fishing techniques in current.
Rudee Inlet and Owls Creek: Rudee Inlet (along with Owls Creek) is a remarkable small body of water that offers an excellent location for new and experienced fly anglers to hone skills in half or full day charters. Combine lunch at one of the many restaurants within Rudee and you have a perfect day!
Lynnhaven River: The Lynnhaven River is home to year around slot and overslot redfish and excellent fall and winter speckled trout fishing. An extensive small river system located in Virginia Beach, the Lynnhaven River offers great fly fishing opportunities in protected waters.
