Been spending as much time as possible with my ailing father, who is in an end of life health decline but fighting nobly. He will be excited to see the wonderful present that arrived today, a framed print of Guy Crittenden’s cobia painting. Our deceased dear friend and former teammate David Murphy is on the bow of my Boston Whaler, with me in the tower, a cobia ready to pounce on his well presented fly. Guy is a world class wildlife artist located here in Virginia. He and I played football next to each other at William and Mary for three years. If you visit his website Crittenden Studio, you can order his artwork on line. The framing service is outstanding and surprisingly inexpensive. Our buddy Murph loved fly fishing and was an excellent cobia on fly fisherman. He caught five cobia on fly one day with me. I think about him daily. Crazy week at the CBBT. Saw 150-300 a day and caught tons on spin and learned a new fly technique from the spin world (upcurrent presentation with glide baits)to get them to eat a fly. Great two days out of Cape Charles with my brother

Great two days out of Cape Charles with my brother-in-law Steve, who stuck this nice redfish on his 7-weight and a “JMU” half n half he tied (purple yellow white). We spent two days poling flats on my Maverick while sight fishing and saw fifteen or so slot sized reds when water clarity allowed, on oyster and sand bottoms. We learned a lot about moving around over there. Navionics app is very helpful (but not totally accurate.) Be careful not to scrape your bottom on oysters! Big reds on fly! Can you see the massive school of reds in pic 2? We saw 1000+ and hooked two reds on fly and four nice cobia. Bill, who wrote the book “Fishing the Rivers of the Mid-Atlantic “, woke up with terrible sciatica, but said “let’s go!”. For the pic he told me “I’m not twisting!” so we took this shot. Almost all of my charters focus on the angler casting, hooking and fighting their fish, as opposed to being handed a rod after the fish has been hooked. We do some of that too, but encourage the former. 11-year old Parker made it happen with this nice cobia on a bucktail, and his dad Alex popped a few.
