A bunch of nice trout, 100% on fly, in super high winds the last couple days. It’s difficult to exaggerate how good the winter speckled trout fly fishing is in Virginia. Paul and Cathy both had 50+ fish days, with a few citation fish mixed in, which has been standard fare with reasonable temps. Most of our fishing is floating lines with surprisingly short leaders. Occasionally we grab an outfit with IM line to ply deeper waters, but the majority of the biomass are on the mudflats soaking up the sun. I have lots of open dates Jan-March. If it’s cold, snowing or raining hard, we cancel, so there’s no risk. Wind is not a problem: I can always get you in the lee with wind to your back. Chasing a tippet word record on fly is difficult. Dr. Jay Wright in Florida has made it a science, setting 4 tippet class speckled trout on fly world records. Norfolk’s Cathy Kallberg set the women’s 4-lb world record in 2023, but the 2-lb tippet record has alluded her. She, and I, are learning how to handle 2-lb test leaders without breaking off big specks, which has happened at least a half dozen times. Building tapered leaders with the right length of 2-lb and a short bite tippet, knot selection, and fly tying (especially hook size and volume of material) are my responsibility. She’s modified her casting, stripping and hook setting methods and together we are getting better as a team and she is now landing bigger trout, just not the right fish yet. Stay tuned. Steady speck action on fly, IF you crack the code! Michael was in town from out west and joined Connor for a speck on fly smackdown, delayed in part due to their guide’s (me!) stubbornness with areas that were holding some fish but not tons of fish, but once we (me) committed to our plan, Michael cracked the code with a double strip-pause retrieve. Connor followed suit and it was game on! Fun day with two really good anglers. We made the run home wondering why conventional tackle anglers are eat up with speckled trout (see Speckled Truth Heavy Hitters program) and fly fishermen are passionate about reds and a bit apathetic about specks. Big specks on fly are kick ass! It’s about the EAT! That thump! Excellent speck fishing on fly the past week including 40-100 fish days with some decent fish mixed in, including a couple of citations. Sidescan has been productive. Floating lines are standard fair with an occasional need for intermediate sink lines in deep water. Leader length varies considerably, shorter with shallow water depths (sometimes as shallow as 2’) and IM lines. Fishing should be good right through winter as long as we don’t have a sustained freeze. Ran from one end of Hampton Roads to the other guiding father-son combo Will and Bill, catching healthy stripers and specks, including one citation speck on fly. Absolutely insane plan that worked out perfectly. Super fun to make it happen. Will is a spectacular fly angler and put on a show with multiple fly lines. Starting to see bigger specks in the system with some citation sized fish. Matt and Zach had a friendly bet going on and they tied on double digit numbers but Zach got the size win with this 28” speck. Nice work gentlemen!
